Ok, I’ll admit it. Shopping for a swimsuit is right up there with finding the perfect jeans, but worse, when your body is not like its former self!

After fitting great-looking swimsuits all week on near-perfect bodies for the Panache swimsuit fashion issue, I had to face the fact: I needed a new swimsuit for my own vacation. I was great at helping my wardrobe clients find the “perfect suit” for their upcoming cruises. But I dreaded the thought of shopping for a swimsuit for myself. I was forced to follow my own advice.

I saw what the suit that I suggested to one of my clients did for her figure and began the search for the suit that would give me some curves in places where curves have seemed to have disappeared with growing older.

To my surprise, today’s retailers and designers have really stepped up their fashion game to provide swim wear to fit regular- sized women, and plus-sized women as well as skinny women.

Of course, you will find bikinis, tankinis (that’s the one with the covered stomach area), boy-short bottoms, bandeau tops, halter and maillot tops, and one-piece styles galore. But this year’s swimsuit choices are even better with details to help the average woman with her figure.

You will find ruching on swimsuits a girl’s best friend to camouflage, and to give lines and shape to the body. As I say to my clients, ruching will cover a magnitude of body flaws – who can tell with the fabric ruched at your waistline, is it fabric or shall I say, the extra “you”?

Don’t forget color as well. To a suit to create instant curve and shape.

Also, find the suit with a higher-cut leg to make legs look long and lean.

Do you dare wear a bikini? If not, maybe you should consider a boy-short or hipster style. You will get a little more coverage and fabric with these choices while attaining the bikini look.

This year’s crop of swim suits allows you to express yourself on the beach or at the pool in many fun ways, from polka dots to rugby stripes to animal prints, not to mention graphic prints.

You can also go bold with bright and cheery summer colors, like red, yellow and orange, along with electric hues like fuchsia, turquoise and lime green.

So get out there and start trying on those suits.

Even I found the perfect suit for the Italian Riviera!

Ciao!
