STrIkINg A CHorD Florida Chamber Music Project wraps up its second season The Florida Chamber Music Project ’s second season comes to a close this month with Shostakovich and Mendelssohn at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. “It’s hard to believe,” says violinist and artistic director Susan Pardue. “I started the project, so I have been with it from the begin-ning. I had no idea how we would be received, and I have been very pleased with the response.” The intimate concerts—fostered by a close-quarters seating arrangement and discussions during and afterwards—bring people together in a way that Pardue also appreciates. “We have cookies and coffee after our concerts and we talk with people,” she says. “Chamber music is a social thing, and I’m interest-ed in what the audience has to say. We have a great audience, and it is always such a pleasure to explore great masterpieces of the cham-ber music repertoire with them.” An exhibit of photos by Jeff Nelson should spark even more con-versation after the concert. The concert takes place on May 17 at 3 PM. Most of the stories come directly from my life.” Doran began car-tooning as a child but didn’t develop a story to tell until two years ago. “Upon first glance Grim Times appears to be just a bunch of cute animals but as the reader digs deeper each animals has a grim story to tell,” he says. With Doran being the only person involved in the production of the comic, there isn’t a set release schedule—they come out when they’re finished. The first comic was released in June and took about six months to complete and the second, released last month, took a little less. He is cur-rently working on the third and hopes to have it avail-able by the summer. grimtimescomic.com by courtnee jaMes Two-day competition challenges local filmmakers imagine making a movie in just two days. during the 48 Hour Film Project filmmakers from the first Coast compete to see who can create the best short film in—you guessed it—two days. on June 5, participating teams are given a genre, character, prop and a line of dialogue to work into their film. films submitted even one-minute late on June 7 will be disqualified. In April, it hit the airwaves on 95.5 FM and became Jacksonville’s first and only college FM radio station. “This is an exciting time for us here at the station,” says Annie Black, Spinnaker Radio’s general manager. “We are offering indie music on the radio to the people of Jacksonville, with programming from students who really care about their school and their community.” The station plays primarily independent rock, pop and hip-hop music. From 10 AM to 6 PM, Monday through Friday, student DJs spin tunes live, with some specialty shows including Local Hour with Ari Sinudom at 7 PM on weeknights and Year In Review with Doug Markowitz on Wednesdays at 8. The signal is broadcast from the UNF campus with a range of about 3.5 miles, reaching the Southside and parts of Mandarin, Arlington and the Beaches. But for those too far away, the station is always available online. unfspinnaker.com/radio 28 | JACKSONVILLEMAG.COM MAY 2015
