Welcome to Montage and the new issue of Montage Magazine! When we opened Montage Laguna Beach in 2003, we waited five years to open our second property, Montage Beverly Hills. I was constantly asked how we would maintain the individuality of each Montage location as we grew as a brand—and I’ll admit that it was a concern that I thought about often. Now that we have hotels and resorts in Utah, South Carolina and Hawaii—with one on its way in Mexico—that concern should be greater, but truthfully, it’s not. We’ve carefully selected some of the most distinct destinations in the world, and our staff is made up of individuals who are passionate about ensuring that guests have the best and most authentic experience possible. Whenever I visit Montage Kapalua Bay, Silla Kaina, the resort’s cultural ambassador, has a story to tell me. If I sit at the bar at Montage Deer Valley, Dave Wallace, the resort’s beverage manager, usually has a new, seasonal drink he wants me to try. Nathan Beriau, executive chef at The Inn at Palmetto Bluff, has amazed me with his creativity in putting his own twist on beloved Southern dishes. It’s that local knowledge and passion that allows our guests a new and immersive experience each time they travel. It’s something you can’t get from a guidebook or anonymous online users—the genuine understanding of a locale through doing, seeing, tasting and sharing. In this issue we really focused on this next level of exploring—where someone ceases to be a tourist and becomes a true traveler. So we honed in on specific stories, like the ones you’ll read on page 82 about two culturally significant boats at Montage Kapalua Bay and Palmetto Bluff. We also went into the kitchens of Montage chefs to find out what it takes to create their tasting menus, which give guests a unique sense of each dining destination (page 62) . For those who enjoy time on the green, we highlight Maui’s spectacular golf courses in Kapalua by finding out what went into their design and creation (page 50). We also spoke to a couple who felt such a deep connection to Laguna Beach that they decided to tie the knot at Montage, overlooking the coast (page 66). We hope these articles and the rest of the magazine provide inspiration for your immersive travels, whether you’re surrounded by palm trees, live oaks or mountainous terrain. The regions that host Montage properties are rich with stories, and we’re thrilled to host you as you create some of your own. Warmly, Alan J. Fuerstman Founder & CEO Montage Hotels & Resorts
