Dr. Colin Lathrop of Lathrop Dental Center Redefining the Dental Experience For some people going to the dentist is so stressful they put it off for years. Whether their anxiety is due to an overactive gag reflex, memories of past dental experiences, or because they’ve let things go so far they’re worried about cost, delaying a dental visit is never a good idea. “Without routine care, there’s an increased risk of gum disease, tooth decay, and other serious dental health problems that only get worse with time,” said Colin Lathrop, DDS of Lathrop Dental Center in Katy. Care for the Dentally- Anxious It is for these patients that Dr. Lathrop has redefined the entire dental experience. “For patients with dental anxiety, we can begin by simply talking,” he said. “Patients come in, sit on the couch, and we just talk about why they don’t like going to the dentist. We take a walk around the office to remove the mystery from their visit. Patients who can’t tolerate an x-ray inside their mouth, can stand and have each side of their mouth x-rayed, without enduring any discomfort.” “I routinely work with an anesthesiologist to maximize the patients comfort, in as few visits as possible,” he said. “We can fix all the problems they’ve been avoiding and often, once they’ve experienced the differences in our office, they’re eager to return to routine dental care. After that, problems can be addressed while they’re still small. Dental fear effects people of all ages and for them it’s very real. But it doesn’t have to be.” Quality Dental Care Unfortunately, by the time Dr. Lathrop sees some anxious patients, they’ve let things go so far that they avoid smiling all together. “It’s rewarding for me to give someone their smile back,” he said. “Many patients who’ve been treated by large corporate dental chains have received the cheapest possible solution to their problem. These treatments most often don’t last and can be expensive to redo. It’s far better to fix a problem right the first time. If the work needed is substantial, we can develop a plan to restore a patient’s teeth in phases, which will fit into their schedule and budget.” Through continuing education with world-class clinicians, Dr. Lathrop and his staff have trained extensively in cosmetic reconstruction, as well as functional rehabilitation. When a patient wishes to improve their smile and recapture their youth, cosmetic veneers and crowns can take years off their appearance. Patient Education Dr. Lathrop takes time to educate his patients about their treatment options, to develop a lifetime plan for optimum oral health. “My patients deserve the best, long-term solutions,” he said. “Whether they need a cleaning, restorative care, or complete rehabilitation, going to the dentist should never be something to fear or avoid. We hear from patients every day who used to dread the dentist and actually look forward to coming to see us.” Diagnostics and Laser Dentistry As the one professional who’s up-close-and-personal in his patients’ mouths, Dr. Lathrop serves as the first line of defense against such conditions as oral cancer and sleep apnea. “We offer revolutionary laser treatment for snoring,” he said. “As we age, our soft palate can begin to sag, touching the tongue, and obstructing our breathing as we sleep. Our laser treats the soft palate to reduce simple snoring.” Sleep Apnea “More severe snoring may be caused by sleep apnea, a potentially fatal condition which can lead to high blood pressure, weight gain, heart disease, diabetes, and ultimately death,” he said. “When we evaluate a patient and suspect sleep apnea, we refer them out for a sleep study and treatment by a sleep apnea expert.” During routine check-ups, Dr. Lathrop also evaluates patients for signs of cancer of the tongue and oral cavity and conducts a full head and neck cancer screening. Patient Rapport Dr. Lathrop doesn’t believe in one-size-fits-all dentistry— far from it. “Whether a patient needs restorative or rehabilitative treatment, braces or a smile makeover, or just a simple cleaning, we never want to fit a square peg in a round hole,” he said. “I try to speak to patients in language they can understand, avoiding dental terminology, so they understand what I’m recommending and why. I’m here to empower my patients to make the best decisions for their own oral health.” Community Support Active members of the Katy/Fulshear community, Dr. Lathrop and his team sponsor local soccer, football, baseball, and t-ball teams. “I played baseball growing up and there was always a local business eager to sponsor our teams. It feels great to pay it forward. This is a unique community. People love living in this area and we want to do whatever we can to make it even better.” Dr. Lathrop serves on the Texas Dental Association Smile Foundation and as an adjunct professor at his former dental school, University of Texas School of Dentistry. When not on the job, he enjoys making memories with his wife, Raven, son, Tucker, and daughters, Parker and Chandler, especially doing anything outdoors together. They feel blessed to be raising their family in the close-knit communities of Fulshear and Katy. I came away with so much information. As a parent, that means a great deal.” Mirxva C. “I had a wonderful experience getting braces for the first time. Very caring staff, took the time to make sure I was comfortable, treated me as an individual and met my individual needs.” Jennifer F.
