Author and Montage Literary Ambassador Brad Meltzer recommends his favorite books for autumn. When Montage Hotels & Resorts asked New York Times best-selling author Brad Meltzer if he’d consider serving as the company’s literary ambassador for 2016, Meltzer didn’t have to think twice about saying “yes.” That’s because not only does Meltzer list Montage Beverly Hills as one of his top hotels of all time, he’s also thrilled to have the opportunity to share his love of reading—and his favorite books—with guests and their children. Meltzer is keen on encouraging everyone to get out from behind their screens and read a book. “People love to talk about those days when we were little and phones didn’t exist, and everyone used to curl up with a book,” he says. “Those days can easily come back: Just take away your child’s phone and replace it with … a great book. It’s amazing what happens. Give them ‘Harry Potter.’ Give them ‘Wonder.’ Give them the good stuff . They’ll recognize quality.” In September, Meltzer released “I am Jane Goodall,” a children’s book about the life of the legendary scientist and conservationist who is famous for studying chimpanzees. He wrote it for his daughter, who is captivated by animals. “My daughter loves dogs,” he explains. “ … So I wrote this one to show her a real hero in a world she adores. … Jane Goodall sees what we all have in common—and how we share this planet. I needed my daughter to hear that.” For those interested in curling up with a good book, Montage’s Bedside Reading program delivers one of Meltzer’s titles (including his newest novel, “The House of Secrets”) straight to guests’ rooms for some quality reading time. Guests traveling with children can also receive a free copy of one of his “Ordinary People Change the World” books, creating a literary experience for the whole family. Brad Meltzer’s Must-Reads The best-selling author shares his picks for parents and kids to enjoy cover to cover this season. FOR ADULTS “THE INVENTION OF WINGS” BY SUE MONK KIDD According to Meltzer, this is “historical fiction with intertwined stories of a slave and abolitionist,” featuring four women and their search for freedom in 19th century Charleston, S.C. FOR ADULTS “BLINDNESS” BY JOSÉ SARAMAGO This novel tells the story of how an epidemic of blindness devastates everything. “Here’s the heavy lifting for your brain,” Meltzer says. “What if blindness … [were] a contagious disease? Here’s the one that’ll make you think.” FOR CHILDREN “STUDY HALL OF JUSTICE” BY DEREK FRIDOLFS AND DUSTIN NGUYEN “What if Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman were little kids and back in school? They’d wander the halls and fight evil, of course,” Meltzer says of this inventive children’s book. FOR CHILDREN “THE BOOK WITH NO PICTURES” BY B.J. NOVAK “This is exactly what the title says,” Meltzer explains. “As you read it, it’s up to you to follow the instructions and make up the sounds. The moment it was done, my son said to me: ‘Read it again.’ ” FOR CHILDREN “I AM JANE GOODALL” BY BRAD MELTZER The 10th book in Meltzer’s “Ordinary People Change the World” series features Jane Goodall, whose work with chimpanzees led to revelations about their social structure.
