FOUNDER’S LETTER Welcome to Montage and the fall issue of Montage Magazine! When I created Montage Hotels & Resorts, I knew that art would play a pivotal role. Beyond the fact that the first property was in Laguna Beach, an arts colony at its roots, I wanted artistry to permeate everything we do, from the interior design to the way we greet each guest. Art is not traditionally a word associated with hospitality, but after more than 10 years of serving discerning travelers, I’m proud that the two have become inextricably linked at Montage. And just as art evolves, breeding new categories and movements, we are constantly looking to what’s new in hotels and resorts, and the future of service. As such, it was only natural that evolving this blend of creativity and hospitality led us to launch Pendry Hotels, a twist on the hotel experience that focuses on cutting-edge design and bold amenities and entertainment to serve today’s luxury travelers. This issue of Montage Magazine offers an exclusive look at the first properties in the Pendry portfolio and our vision for the brand on page 76. Of course, we also continue to enhance the artful offerings at Montage Hotels & Resorts, where guests and residents are constantly surrounded by creative energy—whether it manifests through paintbrushes, pianos or a chef ’s palate. Peruse the masterworks that reside on Montage properties and get a sneak peek into the culinary genius of Geoffrey Zakarian, who this summer launched two new Montage Beverly Hills dining establishments, Georgie and The Garden Bar. In addition, explore the recently unveiled expansion at Montage Palmetto Bluff, a development that we hope will delight newcomers and captivate returning guests. Inspiration comes from all angles, as evidenced by our conversations with visionaries in the cosmetics industry: Jacqueline Piotaz, who founded an eponymous skin care company, and Lucia Pica, Chanel’s new global creative designer for makeup and color. Also in this issue, Montage’s literary ambassador Brad Meltzer offers his top reads for fall, while stylist Joe Katz talks men’s fashion and the season’s hottest trend. We get crafty in the kitchen with caviar and classical in one of the world’s most prestigious concert venues as Carnegie Hall turns 125 years old. I’m thrilled to lead an organization that puts artistry and outside-the-box thinking at the forefront of its philosophy. Creative energy fosters new ideas, transforms experiences and can have profound effects on the human spirit. I hope you find a little bit of that energy in this issue and during your stay at Montage. Warmly, Alan J. Fuerstman Founder and CEO
