SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL Jan. 19-29, 2017; Park City, Utah, and surrounding areas What do “Reservoir Dogs,” “The Usual Suspects,” “Super Size Me,” “Whiplash” and “Boyhood” all have in common? They all premiered at the famous Sundance Film Festival, the largest independent film festival in the United States, before dominating box offices across the country. Founded in 1985, the Sundance Film Festival now takes place in Park City, Salt Lake City and the Sundance Mountain Resort, and draws some of Hollywood’s most important and up-and-coming actors, directors and producers to Utah to celebrate independent films. The festival was created by the Sundance Institute, which was founded in 1981 by Robert Redford. This year’s festival will feature about 200 feature-length and short films. Although the institute’s most famous event is the annual festival, it also hosts several other public programs throughout the year, including labs for directors, screenwriters, musicians and more. Past panels have covered topics including the power of story, the art of film, new frontiers, innovative technology and forward-thinking strategies. “Sundance Institute has a long history of supporting some of the best artists in independent film and launching careers for some of the greatest directors in film,” says Sarah Pearce, managing director of the Sundance Institute. “Revealing our festival program is one of the most exciting times of the year. The programming rolls out in waves as our team works tirelessly to curate a dynamic and thought-provoking slate of films, panels, music and new media installations.” The first wave of selected films to be screened at the festival were announced in late November. Now the exhibition will be reproduced in a new book, planned to be released in February 2017 by Rizzoli. (rizzoliusa.com)
