Hilary had just signed up for her first Ironman triathlon when they met. Doug, a partner in a local sports PR firm, trained by her side while they dated. Six years after meeting, Doug got down on one knee on the sidelines—in the exact same spot they’d met—and proposed. the wedding day started with Hilary and her bridesmaids getting ready at the Willard while enjoying a classic silver cothee service. The pair wed at Doug’s childhood church before heading over to Malmaison for a daytime wedding. Hilary planned the affair herself, giving it a classic yet chic feel. Guests sat at one long table with centerpieces of white English roses in moss-covered boxes. the venue’s two-tiered space allowed for a specialty cothee bar with homemade syrups (Hilary’s pick) on one level and a cocktail bar (Doug’s pick) on the other. the menu featured various stations, including a crepe station and a carving station. Since it was brunch time, guests also sipped on mimosas and Bloody Marys. the day was a family affair. Hilary wore her grandmother’s aquamarine ring as her “something blue.” Hilary’s brother, Olympic athlete Michael Phelps, who had just welcomed a son a few days before, joined in the festivities via FaceTime; and her niece and nephew served as ring bearer and junior bridesmaid. the couple has plans to honeymoon in Barcelona and the Canary Islands soon. –Katie Bianco WEDDING RESOURCES Bridal Gown Labella Bridal, labellabridalboutique.com Bridal Hair Brian Oliver, The Artist Agency, theartistagency.com Groom’s Attire Tommy Hilfiger, tommyhilfiger.com Bridesmaids Dresses Alfred Sung, alfredsung.com Catering Malmaison, malmaisondc.com Linen Rentals DC Rentals, dcrentals.com Something Borrowed The bride tied a locket her father had given her mother on their wedding day to the inside of her dress.
