LIGHT the Night A chic wedding complete with fireworks created a sparkling day and night for Caroline Weller and Addison Barden. CAROLINE AND ADDISON’S whirlwind romance is worthy of a romcom movie montage. The couple met in New York City and, as Caroline tells it: “He pretty much swept me off my feet. We fell in love running around Manhattan, lots of adventures, lots of laughs. There was no turning back.” Their romance culminated in a sunrise engagement on the beach at Ocean City, Md. With the help of wedding planner Elle Ellinghaus, Caroline and Addison planned a sophisticated reception on the estate of her family’s private winery, McClure Family Vineyard, that combined the elegance of a black-tie wedding with the rustic feel of an outdoor event. To set the stage, a tent for the couple’s 185 guests was erected. A black liner elevated the sophistication and made the aesthetic less bridal. “I wanted it to feel like it was Addison’s too,” says Caroline. “I didn’t want all white and pink. I thought classic black would be a good antidote to that.” In addition to the black liner, the color palette included grays, charcoals and creams, with lots of candles throughout the space, “so everything was sort of glowing,” says Caroline. The sophisticated feel of the tent was juxtaposed against the greenery of the surrounding estate. Guests were given carrots and peppermint to feed the roaming horses during cocktail hour, and were also served Champagne and elderflower with ice cubes frozen with spring flowers inside once they entered the barn. After a sit-down dinner featuring synchronized service and a menu of oysters Rockefeller, filet mignon and crab cakes, the dinner tables were replaced with white couches and cocktail tables. Throughout the night, an artist was live painting the party. For dessert, antique trays were passed with creme brulee, which was lit and toasted as it was being served. As the dancing ended, the couple did a showstopping exit. Guests followed them out of the tent, where two rows of 25-foot firework sprays shot into the air as the couple ran in between them. “We started to run through the fireworks, and he stopped and kissed me,” says Caroline. “It was in the heat of the moment, but it was like he had rehearsed it. It was such a cool moment.” The couple honeymooned at the Cheval Blanc in St. Barts.
