HARBOR STYLE MAGAZINE’S GUIDE TO ENGLEWOOD INSIDE GREAT PLACES & FACES 44 Photos by Heidemarie Burke
Join us here as we take you on a whirlwind tour and wave hello to the friendly businesses of one of Florida’s best kept secrets – Englewood. First, we eat…
We dined at Howards Restaurant recently and caught owners Bryan and Ken showing off the beautiful new state-ofthe- art bar. Really nice! They’ve been busy hosting 50/50 raffles, netting more than $6,000 for Englewood Waterfest. Check out their new winter menu and awardwinning salad bar.
Over at Vino Loco Wine, Tapas & Gourmet, we heard all about Joyce and Roz’s trip to France. They brought back some great new wines! They also met Ludvine from winemaker Maison Ambrose and Pauline Morin from Beaujolais, both hosting wine dinners there this winter.
Craving Jersey-style pie? Head over to Bobarino’s Pizzeria. Dawn Marie, the owner, has a loyal staff and a warm, friendly, down home restaurant right off Dearborn Street. And there’s so much more than just great pizza here. They have a menu full of great Italian specialties.
Another one of our absolute favorite spots is Mango Bistro. Owners Marie, from France, and Ricardo, from Brazil, have created an authentic little European café with tropical flair. Delicious food, a great wine selection and live world music and jazz on the weekends. Love this place!
Time for coffee? Hit up Joe Maxx Coffee Company in Olde Englewood Village, HARBOR’S HOTTEST Finalist for Best Coffee Shop. Meet some really friendly baristas who love their work – ask for a “Signature Pour” and get your caffeine on! Delish bakery goods are here, too.
Merrill and Tony Hollinger, owners of Englewoods on Dearborn, are showing off a remodeled restaurant and courtyard. Beautiful! The night we were there the joint was jumping. There’s great food, cold beer and live music five nights a week. Check it out ASAP.
The only downside to having so many great dining spots now is the upside on the scales! To help stay in shape, we have a couple of suggestions. First, there’s The Pilates Sanctuary. The day we popped in to see Terri Josephson at her great workout studio on South River Road, we saw a 50- ish guy sweating to the oldies on a machine and a 20-something gal doing her Pilates. Equally as appealing for staying in shape is the Englewood YMCA. There are literally dozens of community-centric programs for all ages here. Marcia Ziegler, membership director, invites everyone to explore the myriad facilities, classes, programs and services offered.
Biking is also a great workout. We went riding recently with Melody and Gary from Real Bikes Englewood. Their shop is filled with great bikes in all price ranges with complete service and repair, plus apparel. And they won Finalist for Best Bike Shop in HARBOR’S HOTTEST last year.
For the golfer, GM Ian Fetigan of Boca Royale Golf & Country Club is seeing a huge increase in golf rounds being played. It appears to be a result of the new greens they put in last summer and the new Head Golf Professional, Ed McConnell.
Back over in Olde Englewood Village at Old Florida Outdoor Center and Gallery, you’ll meet owner, artist and Florida native Kenye Leonard. This is an atelier full of original Florida art and creativity, plus crafts and classes. There are even antiques in the backyard of this 100-year-old building.
Just a few doors away you’ll find The Treasure Trove. We stopped in to welcome new owners Cheryl and John Burn and instantly fell in love with the award-winning homemade fudge! This eclectic shop also offers painted furniture, metal art pieces and so much more.
Dearborn Street Jewelry & Repair is in a beautiful Old-Florida style house right on Dearborn; you can’t miss it. Inside you’ll meet Forrest, the English bulldog. His human, Angela Snyder, will serve your every jewelry need, from a watch battery to a dazzling anniversary broach. Drop in soon.
Chris Birchfield and husband Steve have Basix on Dearborn and Beyond Basix. It’s always a treat to visit with them, chat a while and browse their marvelous collection of American-made products. Clothing, vintage décor goods and lampshades…too eclectic to describe here - just go…okay?
Also on Dearborn, pop in and say hi to Rita and Jerry at The Past Revisited. This appropriately named shop is almost more museum than retail, filled with early American pieces. They have some real treasures. Voted First Place in HARBOR’S HOTTEST for Best Antique Shop.
Very near Dearborn is Ann’s Flowers. We enjoyed watching them create unique artworks with flowers while we were there. Ann’s passion is clearly visible in her team’s floral creations for any occasion. Tell them HARBOR STYLE sent you!
Steve and Joni Boger, the cute couple who own Englewood Art & Frame, are happy to announce two convenient locations for the finest matting and framing available. They’re right in the Arts District on West Dearborn and on South McCall Road.
We also discovered the delightful new Sea Star Cove on West Dearborn. Creative Connie Majka offers handmade home décor, often repurposed from driftwood and old furniture and reincarnated into a works of real art.
Then we popped over to Lemon Bay Playhouse, where Executive Director Bob LaSalle personally showed us around. This intimate community theatre is such a treasure. Check out the upcoming performances and get your tickets; they always sell out fast.
Women all around Englewood have relied on A Cut Above Styling Salon to stay beautiful and stylish for more than 30 years in this friendly salon.

A real jewel we have here in Englewood is our very own Englewood Community Hospital. The wonderful staff there is beyond compare, offering the highest level of care. The talented team of caregivers is there whenever you may need them.
We arranged a meeting with dynamo Julia Mercier for lunch one day. Her CPA firm, Mercier CPA Associates, is growing nicely and she’s even bringing on more staff. She’s a financial whiz-kid and offers a complimentary initial consult. You should meet her.
We paid a visit to David at Lasbury- Tracy Realty, and he told us his family has owned property in the Englewood area for more than 100 years! He’s a fourth generation real estate agent and has the oldest real estate firm in Englewood, established in 1951.
We made friends with some newly minted Floridians who wanted to explore Englewood’s art scene. We introduced them to the Englewood Art Center. They loved it! Now they are throwing pots, shooting great photos and drawing fabulous figures. Classes for kids and adults – check it out.
Did you know Englewood has a winery? Catania’s Winery crafts their own right here and is top rated by Trip Advisor. John and Margherita Catania host regular wine tastings and carry a great selection of olive oils as well. Stop in and say hi.
No room at your place for guests? Send them to Weston’s wannaB inn. Manager Bobbie Marquis was telling us how their guests love to fish and sometimes bring their own boats because they have docks. Since they are directly on the beach, your guests can relax and do nothing at all.
Want more unique? Try Kathy Genth’s Branded Heart Stables. These beautiful, gentle horses guide you through ancient trails that reveal the Real Florida. You’ll feel as if you are a million miles away. You’ll love it, we promise.
Paige Bakhaus is the area’s most visible ambassador for stand up paddle boarding, SUP for short. She and her guides at Hooked on SUP are Certified Master Naturalists and you simply can’t get closer to our aquatic nature than by paddle board. Find her at Cape Haze Marina.
Another great eatery is Spinnaker Café on North Access Road. This family business includes parents Sue and Ken and now daughter Lisa who runs the show most days. Made-to-order breakfast, lunch and dinner. Love their in-house bakery with homemade creamy cannolis. Yummy!
Like a good neighbor, Matt and Ron Smith and State Farm Insurance are there. Conveniently located on South Indiana, see them for all your insurance and financial services needs. Personal service is their hallmark, which may be why they were voted HARBOR’S HOTTEST Finalist, Best Insurance Agency.
We visited Southern Design Living, that beautiful aquamarine building on Placida Road. There you’ll find an incredible selection of coastal-inspired home furnishings and accessories. There’s also a great display of outdoor ideas for the patio, lanai and outdoor kitchen.
Aren’t seeing as sharply as you used to? Go to Center for Sight. They are the first to offer the recently approved TECNIS Symfony Intraocular Lens, an advanced lens that has restored glasses-free vision to patents with cataracts from across the globe.
While having coffee with Dave Lipstein, who’s been here in Englewood for forever and really knows his real estate, he said, “The market is right, right now!” He has Manasota Key Realty and Conch Out Vacation Rentals located right over the bridge, first building on the left.
We popped in to Surfside Salon and Spa to welcome new owners Suzanne Bartol and Amy Weeks. They are expanding to include massage, skincare treatments and more, conveniently on Beach Road, Manasota Key.
And just down the road is what we call our secret hideaway, Manasota Beach Club. We attended a gala there and had a ball! Now in its 55th season, they’ve hosted generations of families in the quaint Gulf-side cottages among 25 acres of pure paradise.
The Elmore Family hosted us at their legendary restaurant directly on Englewood Beach, Gulf View Grill. The great food, cocktails and service are barely upstaged by the view - million dollar sunsets, the best anywhere. And there’s catering available. Get married here!
Located right at the Beach Road and McCall intersection is Emmett’s Salon & Day Spa, HARBOR’S HOTTEST finalist for best spa. This long-time Englewood family business has been keeping us beautiful for many years. Offering full salon and spa services as well as organic products for hair and skin.
Eager to find a new home? Our friends at Gulf Realty, the Chappell family, really know the town and the island. They can help you buy, sell, rent or manage your property. They love their work and are really involved in our community.
Many of the photos you’ll see here in EXPLORE ENGLEWOOD are by wellknown, award-winning local photographer Heidemarie of Photographic Images. She invites you to consider her for your next photographic opportunity – she’s renowned for her beach portraits! Weddings and special events a specialty.
And everyone in Englewood loves animals. The Suncoast Humane Society works every day to make life better for thousands of homeless animals a year. Learn more about the work of the compassionate staff and perhaps contribute your own time, talent or treasures.
That’s all for now, bye bye!
