FOUNDER’S LETTER Welcome to Montage and the spring issue of Montage Magazine! Spring is a season full of meaning. In literature, it often symbolizes new beginnings. In nature, it’s when we see sprouts break through the soil and flowers bloom. And, in my house, it’s also the start of the ever-important yet perennially dreaded spring cleaning. At Montage, spring is always a time to celebrate. Many of our time-honored traditions— like our Easter egg hunts and Mother’s Day brunches—take place during these months, and our chefs and mixologists anticipate a bounty of fresh ingredients to play with on the menus. Guests take to their favorite spring activities, whether that means whale watching in Kapalua Bay, hiking in Deer Valley or fishing for seasonal catches in Palmetto Bluff. Marking the beginnings of tremendous initiatives by talented and driven young people, Montage Memory Makers is also a springtime announcement. In this issue, we’re thrilled to recognize this new generation of change-makers who are giving back to their communities in big ways. We at Montage Hotels & Resorts are happy to award the Montage Memory Makers with $10,000 scholarships to go toward their college education. For those planning to travel in the months ahead, it’s apropos that our spring issue takes a deeper look at some destinations undergoing fascinating rebirths. Explore Baltimore, the home of Montage International’s recently opened Sagamore Pendry Baltimore hotel, and read about the city’s transformation that welcomes the new while paying homage to years past. Likewise, New York’s renowned Metropolitan Opera celebrates its 50th anniversary this season. Learn how it embraces both authenticity and innovation to appeal to modern audiences. On the West Coast, take a stroll down another icon—Rodeo Drive— which has received its own updates by way of new store openings and renovations in recent years. Sometimes, however, the most enticing trip is from plate to palate. In that spirit, within this edition, meet a Montage chef commemorating the fresh fruits and vegetables of spring, and mixologists who are experimenting with floral-inspired beverages. Cocktail historian Brian Van Flandern offers up some additional drink recipes to complete the epicurean adventure. And a spring issue would not be complete without a love story. This one takes place at Montage Palmetto Bluff, a Southern retreat that is made for romance. There’s more to uncover in the pages to follow, and we hope you have as much fun reading this paean to springtime as we did creating it. Cheers to new beginnings. Warmly, Alan J.
