The weeklong event first occurred in 1963 and is a way to promote, preserve and perpetuate Hawaiian culture. Activities include the Merrie Monarch Invitational Hawaiian Arts Fair featuring local crafters, artists and entertainers, the Merrie Monarch Royal Parade and three days of hula competitions. The festival is considered a premier forum for those who practice and appreciate the art of both ancient and modern hula. Beyond premieres, the event, founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff in 2001, will host Tribeca Talks with leading filmmakers and legendary industry members participating in interactive sessions. Conversations set to take place include one with actress and singer Barbra Streisand and another with director Alejandro González Iñárritu. (citymarketsouth.com) ARTISTIC HAPPENINGS Across the United States, the nation’s largest and most renowned galleries and museums are celebrating new acquisitions by established and burgeoning artists alike. “SNOW WHITE” Classic movie palaces, drive-ins, Italian opera houses and abandoned theaters line the pages of “Snow White,” a new book from famed Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto, whose work can be seen at various art museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Tate in London. The collector’s edition text published by Damiani features 65 black-and-white photographs from Sugimoto’s ongoing “Theaters” series. To capture the images, Sugimoto uses light from movies being screened to acquire shots that highlight the theaters’ architectural details and mystic.
