LAST WORDS ON WHERE WE TRAVEL AND WHY With its giant white letters fixed into the Hollywood Hills, the iconic Hollywood sign may be one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world. For nearly 100 years, it has been a symbol of aspiration and the endless possibilities that can be found in the City of Angels. After finishing school, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the photography industry. Exhausted from hectic days at work, I found sanctuary in nearby hiking trails that offered fantastic vistas of the city. From Will Rogers State Historic Park in Pacific Palisades to Franklin Canyon Park outside of Beverly Hills, trails were abundant in the city if you knew where to look. Bronson Canyon in Griffith Park became one of my favorites because of its stunning views of downtown from behind the Hollywood sign. Los Angeles is one of the busiest cities in the world, but after a short hike into the hills, it becomes just you and nature. My career and adventures eventually took me away from the city, but my endearment for the Hollywood sign and its unique juxtaposition between city and nature was never far from my thoughts. Last October, I found myself back in Los Angeles and I was determined to capture a photograph of the famous landmark. It was still dark when I started my hike to the sign. A storm was approaching and I needed to reach the peak before dawn. As I climbed, I was reminded just how rural these hills were—catching glimpses of owls flying overhead and hearing the howls of coyotes breaking the early morning silence. It was peaceful watching the city slowly awaken, as cars began to fill the streets and house lights turned on. Standing behind the sign, looking out over the windswept vista, I knew this was it, this was what I wanted to photograph. The point where nature becomes a metropolis. Watching the sun break the horizon, I couldn’t help but feel a kind of kinship with both nature and the bustling city below. That’s why I love this location: Each time I’m here, it shows me something new. I clicked my camera shutter to capture the incredible scene unfolding in front of me. The sun rising over the iconic Hollywood sign with the city of Los Angeles in the distance, bringing in a new day full of possibilities, hopes and dreams.
