Babymoon travel is booming with luxurious locales, bespoke experiences and couple-centric connections. From niche to norm, the babymoon vacation has birthed its own movement, presenting soonto- be parents with a last-chance opportunity for relaxation, reconnection and romance in a low-risk, high-reward getaway before their child arrives. Soaring in popularity among the expectant set, the babymoon is a staple of modern sojourning, with celebrity pairings and everyday couples alike winging off to somewhere special for a little prebaby pampering. COUPLE ’HOODS When it comes to babymooning possibilities, “Oh goodness, your options are endless,” says Darcy Allen, owner of Travel by Darcy, a boutique travel agency specializing in romance and family travel. “You can have a babymoon anywhere. What one person considers an ideal babymoon might not work for the next, so my recommendation is to focus on the experience and right style of accommodations to fit what you’re looking for in that moment.” For some, this means a weekend in a stylish urban setting; to others, a last hurrah in sundrenched surrounds. “And if it’s baby No. 4, maybe it’s simply an overnight in the next town over with 24-hour room service,” says Allen, adding that while favorable exchange rates and nonstop flights from major U.S. gateways have made a weekend in European cities like Paris or Madrid more reasonable, many babymooners are looking at options closer to home. Skimping on time doesn’t mean skimping on luxury, however. A babymoon at Montage Beverly Hills, for example, promises plush accommodation anywhere at the hotel, but most generously in one of its luxurious guestroooms, with fine dining at Georgie a convenient waltz away and glamorous shopping nearby on Rodeo Drive. Potential options only become problematic when prioritizing place over the state of one’s pregnancy, so whether skyline or shoreline, mountain or island, road trip or cruise, babymoons should reflect a woman’s condition at the time of travel. An escape that capitalizes on the beauty of nature is perfect for the expectant mom at a more active period in her pregnancy (the first trimester into the second), while the late-stage babymooner is sure to seek out a breezy beach cabana. Wise couples know that a location that seems desirable early in pregnancy might be far less so at six months, so thoughtful consideration is key. DO DATES Light walks, scenic drives, easy yoga and cultural enrichment classes are all good activities for moms-to-be in their first and second semesters. Those farther along typically lean toward more restorative interludes. Appealing to babymooners’ bespoke sensibilities, Montage Deer Valley offers an intimate spa experience with its 1,300-square-foot Serenity Suite—a rentable space with two copper soaking tubs, a Swiss shower and a secluded area for couples’ massage with a fireplace and balcony. The resort’s concierge team also will tailor a variety of experiences to a babymoon, from a private cooking class with a Montage chef centered on cooking for a new family, to a painting course through local Park City’s Paint Mixer, to a romantic moonlight hike. The scenic nature of Montage Palmetto Bluff, in South Carolina, makes for an especially idyllic babymoon. Here, couples can enjoy exploring the May River onboard the resort’s antique motor yacht, Grace, while dolphins glide alongside the boat and eagles fly overhead. The resort’s electric duffy boats, meanwhile, cruise the freshwater lagoons of Palmetto Bluff, passing by Bird Island, a natural avian sanctuary, in a smooth, steady ride for pregnant mothers. Complementing the beauty of this waterscape is a beautifying date at the resort’s salon, where Artistic Director Dennis Stokely, a celebrity stylist, makes moms-to-be feel like stars, whether it’s with a blowout before dinner or a stylish new cut. For additional spa spoils, Montage Laguna Beach delivers with its cosseting options: the Couple’s Massage Escape for two (a personalized offering featuring a specially certified prenatal massage therapist for her) and the Blissful Escape Pedicure and aromatherapy blending bar experience with options specifically designed for moms-to-be. Equally delectable is dining poolside at Mosaic Bar and Grill amid panoramic scenes of the Pacific. At Montage Kapalua Bay in Maui, babymooners can capture every moment of their baby bliss in a private photo session with Pacific Dream Photography, seek seclusion at the resort’s historic waterfront hideaway Cliff House or schedule a Hapai prenatal massage at Spa Montage. Finally, separate babymoon from bucket list— it’s not the last trip of one’s life, nor need it be approached as the trip of a lifetime. Trim the itinerary. “Focus on the reasons why you’re taking a babymoon in the first place,” Allen advises. “Is this just another trip and you happen to be pregnant, or are you looking to get something specific out of your babymoon experience? Either way, the trip itself should be a stress-free process,” so plan ahead and expect the best.
