A qualifying festival for the Academy Awards, the event showcases the best films of the year and draws many of Hollywood’s most beloved stars to attend. The abundance of world premieres and special screenings makes the festival a highly anticipated event for those in the film world. (afi.com) ARTISTIC HAPPENINGS Across the United States, the nation’s largest and most renowned galleries and museums are celebrating new acquisitions by established and burgeoning artists alike. “MARVIN E. NEWMAN” Capturing the people, landmarks, chaos, energy and unique experience of 20th-century New York, Marvin E. Newman’s distinct color photography is a vivid illustration of the time between the late 1940s and early 1980s. In this book, Taschen presents the 89-year-old artist’s first career monograph composed of some 170 images. The volume also includes pictures from Newman’s sports photography portfolio as seen in Life, Look and Sports Illustrated. Outside of New York, the compilation features images from the Midwest; Chicago; a vintage 1950s circus; a legalized brothel in Reno, Nevada; Las Vegas; Alaska; and the West Coast.
