Travel and fashion blogger Jacey Duprie suggests five apps to help you shoot, edit and share your best travel moments like a pro. The essence of great travel photography and photo sharing isn’t presenting a completely artificial image, but creating artful and beautiful photos that capture the spirit of what you see and experience. “My goal is that followers are aware that the images have been improved, but that it’s not obvious,” says Jacey Duprie, lifestyle, travel, fashion writer and editor of the blog Damsel in Dior (damselindior.com). “I don’t want my readers to feel that the life I’m living is unattainable. But it’s the filters that can make the images beautiful.” A growing number of available apps can elevate your editing abilities with advanced tools that are intuitive to use. Here, Duprie shares a few of her favorite photo-enhancing apps that will help you easily capture the magic of your moments in style. “VSCO offers wonderful filters and editing tools,” Duprie says. Developed by the company that makes plug-ins for Photoshop, VSCO gives results to please serious photographers. Ten free pre-set filters are included, additional ones can be purchased, and you can make custom tweaks on top of the standard filters. VSCO is also a photo sharing and learning tool: Each photo displayed is labeled with filters and settings used, so you can try to replicate the results. SNAPSEED allows you to fine-tune basics on every photo such as contrast and brightness, but also elusive elements like ambience, structure and sharpness. Your subjects will thank you when you also apply the Face Filter to adjust skin tone and eye clarity. “You have a lot of control over manipulating the images in Snapseed,” Duprie says, using just a finger to slide for minute gradations of change. “You can also use the filters, and save the ones you like best at the top of your list.” The complete antithesis for grandpa’s travel slideshows in the living room? Posting a travel video edited by INSHOT VIDEO EDITOR FOR IPHONE, Duprie’s go-to app for editing. InShot allows you to trim and edit, merge two video clips together, adjust video speed and even blur the borders of your video to make it ready for the Instagram square. Add your own music, voice-overs and sound effects to inform and amuse your followers. While Duprie likes Dropbox for long-term photo storage, GOOGLE PHOTOS is a practical choice for travelers and amateurs. Set up the app so every photo you take is automatically synced, removing them from your phone storage and making your images accessible from any device. (When you get home from vacation, images will already be on your laptop through Google Drive.) Google Photos also automatically sorts the photos so you can search by date, location or subject. If you want to take your holiday photo in the “golden hour” before sunset, purchase the app conceived for the pros: THE PHOTOGRAPHER’S EMPHEMERIS. This app overlays the raw data of an ephemeris (the numerical position of astronomical objects) on Google Maps, allowing users to see the angle of the sun and moon for any time, date and location on earth. Too much detail? Do what Duprie does and check the weather app for information, and then wing it. You’re on vacation, after all.
