FOUNDER’S LETTER Welcome to the winter issue of Montage Magazine! Welcome to Montage and the winter issue of Montage Magazine! It is hard to believe that it’s been 15 years since we opened our first resort, Montage Laguna Beach. I’m often asked about what has changed in the industry since 2002—the hospitality trends driving hotel and resort offerings, the patterns in guests’ expectations and preferences, and even the selection process behind Montage’s new destinations. The answer is: everything—and I wouldn’t have it any other way. We started out with a thendisruptive idea that luxury could be different than the traditional, somber, white-gloved experience. Today, the Montage portfolio comprises five hotels and resorts across the U.S. with our first international offering, Montage Los Cabos, opening in 2018. The industry has evolved completely, and our discerning guests and residents, too, have different priorities than they did 15 years ago. Montage was founded to challenge the status quo, which is why I believe we continue to thrive in a rapidly changing landscape. Earlier this year, I was honored to receive the Environmental Media Association Corporate Responsibility Award for Montage International’s sustainable hotel and resort developments. The recognition underscores our commitment to the environment and sustainability, but also showcases our company culture of doing what’s right, even when it might not be what everyone else is doing. Of course, this wouldn’t be possible without our outstanding team that upholds those values at every property, every day. It’s with the same pride that we bring you another exciting issue of Montage Magazine, in which we reflect on the past 15 years in a feature celebrating our milestone (page 50) and look forward to the future, including a sneak peek at what’s in store for the highly anticipated opening of Montage Los Cabos (page 82). Speaking of the future, discover the innovations in the world of smartwatches (page 46), also in this issue. And because there is no better indicator of the years to come than our children, we bring you an article about Hearts of Montage’s partnership with the Boys & Girls Club Palmetto Bluff (page 84). I hope you enjoy this issue of the magazine and your stay with us. I’m humbled to celebrate 15 years of Montage, and thrilled to be able to share it with you. Warmly, Alan J.
