Manufacturer Selected By Airbus To 3-D Print Polymer Serial Flying A350 XWB Parts

Stratasys Direct Manufacturing, a subsidiary of Stratasys Ltd. and a 3-D printing and advanced manufacturing service provider, will produce 3-D printed polymer parts for use on Airbus A350 XWB aircraft. The company will print non-structural parts, such as brackets and other parts used for system installation, on Stratasys FDM production 3- D printers using ULTEM 9085 material. “The project will help Airbus achieve greater supply chain flexibility and improve cost competitiveness, while leveraging on reduced material consumption and waste,” said an Airbus spokesperson.

Stratasys Direct Manufacturing’s 3- D printing capacity and infrastructure allow printing and shipping parts on demand to Airbus, bringing the expected reactivity, tighter turnaround times and lower inventory costs.

Multiple Electron Beam Additive Manufacturing (EBAM) Systems Provided To American Parts Supplier

Sciaky, Inc . , a subsidiary of Phillips Service Industries, Inc. (PSI) and leading provider of metal additive manufacturing (AM) solutions, has reached an agreement to provide multiple Electron Beam Additive Manufacturing (EBAM) systems to an American-based metal 3-D printing parts supplier. The supplier will serve as a turnkey parts bureau for many industries, including aerospace, defense, automotive and oil and gas.

The parts supplier, who wishes to remain anonymous for competitive reasons, will unveil details of this project in the coming months.

“Sciaky is excited to further expand our one-of-a-kind, large-scale metal 3-D printing technology with the marketplace,” said Bob Phillips, Vice President of Marketing for Sciaky, Inc. “We are also proud that two American companies are working together in the AM market to provide jobs for American families, without burdening the American taxpayer.”

Delivery of the first round of Sciaky EBAM systems is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2017.

“As the most widely scalable, metal additive manufacturing solution in the industry (in terms of work envelope), Skiaky’s EBAM systems can produce parts ranging from 8 inches (203 mm) to 19 feet (5.79 meters) in length,” said a company spokesperson. “EBAM is also the fastest deposition process in the metal additive manufacturing market, with gross deposition rates ranging from seven to 20 lbs. (3.18 to 9.07 kg) of metal per hour. EBAM brings quality and control together with IRISS – the Interlayer Real-time Imaging and Sensing System, which is the only real-time monitoring and control system in the metal 3-D printing market that can sense and digitally self-adjust metal deposition with precision and repeatability. This innovative closed-loop control is the primary reason that Sciaky’s EBAM 3-D printing process delivers consistent part geometry, mechanical properties, microstructure and metal chemistry from the first part to the last.”

Deep Hole Drilling Specialist To Serve North America

Kadia Inc. has set up a division to provide deep hole drilling solutions to manufacturers in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The development follows the company’s appointment to sell and service the full range of deep hole drilling machines and tooling from TBT Tiefbohrtechnik, which was founded in southern Germany in 1966. Both Kadia and TBT are members of the multinational Nagel Group.

The agreement includes a license for Kadia Inc. to manufacture, stock, resell and regrind carbide-tipped gun drills locally. The machines themselves will continue to be built at TBT’s factory in Germany.

“We develop deep hole drilling processes for any size of manufacturing project, from firearms through automotive and petrochemical to medical drilling solutions,” commented Dennis Tanis, Vice President of Kadia’s North American operation.

“In most cases these drilling systems are supplied based on standard TBT gun drilling machines with one to six spindles.

“If a machine has more than two spindles, it is often equipped with automated loading and unloading by a gantry-mounted, or pick-and-place robot.

“We make carbide tipped tools here for gun drilling and stock 250 different part numbers for immediate delivery in the size range 0.05 to 1”. TBT’s range goes higher, however, to 1.65” diameter and also encompasses solid carbide, indexable insert and drills ground with a high speed chip breaker.”

The first two TBT deep hole drilling machines sold by Kadia Inc are being used for rifle barrel manufacture.

Process reliability trials of over 100 cycles were carried out on the machine using a 33” long drill with a special TiAlN-coated cutting edge and chip breaker geometry. Bores 450 mm deep and 5.6 mm in diameter were drilled at a feedrate of 240 mm/min, meeting the customer’s required cycle time. Surface finish of 0.03 to 0.05 mm Ra runout was also achieved.

The short, four-month lead-time from receipt of order to supply is due to TBT holding partly finished machines in its factory located in Dettingen an der Erms, near Stuttgart, for rapid completion to customer specifications. Both machines are ML200 horizontal , twin - spindle models (www.kadiausa.com/tbt-machinery) from the TBT range, supplied without automation for manual load / unload by DC Machine’s operators. The company’s owner, Brian Plaisance, already has several deep hole drilling machines on the shop floor including one from TBT. The machine’s performance left him in no doubt as to which make to choose when he needed to invest in extra capacity to cope with increasing demand for barrels from rifle manufacturers in the U.S.

TBT gun drills are suited to producing long small diameter holes on conventional machining centers and lathes. When using a gun drill on these types of machines a pilot hole must be first drilled to guide the tool.

Manufacturing Industry Critical To Economic Prosperity

According to the 2017 Manufacturing Perceptions Survey from Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute, the vast majority of surveyed Americans believe manufacturing plays a vital role in safeguarding U.S. economic prosperity and maintaining their quality of life. The study found 76% of Americans surveyed believe the U.S. should invest further in the manufacturing industry.

“Modern manufacturing has captured the imagination of the American public and our elected leaders,” said Jay Timmons, President and CEO of the National Association of Manufacturers. “This important research indicates public opinion of the future of the industry has taken a measurable, positive jump as people acknowledge the strong connection between this industry, the U.S. economy and the American way of life. As we have done with our Creators Wanted video series, manufacturers are taking it upon themselves to tell the story of our industry and the lives we touch; it is encouraging to see that our story is resonating.”

“More people understand modern manufacturing is high-tech,” added Seema Pajula, Deloitte & Touche LLP and Vice Chairman, Deloitte LLP. “They expect jobs to involve innovation and advanced technology in the future, which is progress for the industry in realigning the image of what modern manufacturing looks like to the general public.”

The Study’s Findings

• Among those surveyed, 83% believe U.S. manufacturing is critical to economic prosperity, and 81% feel it is important to maintaining their standard of living.

• Eighty-one percent of Americans also believe trade and export of American manufactured goods benefit the U.S. economy.

• Seventy-six percent of respondents believe the U.S. needs a more strategic approach to developing its manufacturing base; the same number (76%) believe the U.S. should further invest in the manufacturing industry.

• Seventy-one percent of respondents believe that the U.S. should ensure long-term, stable funding for programs that spur innovation and advanced manufacturing.

• Nearly 9 in 10 (88%) respondents expect future manufacturing jobs will require a higher level of technical skill, and 77% expect manufacturing jobs will require less manual labor.

• Eighty-one percent of respondents believe that future manufacturing jobs will occur in cleaner and safer environments.

• Nearly two-thirds (64%) of respondents believe the U.S. manufacturing industry is already high-tech, up from 43% in the 2014 survey.

• Parents of school-age children, people of Generation X and those most familiar with manufacturing (i.e., people who have worked or are working in the manufacturing industry) see manufacturing as the number one most preferred job-creation engine in the U.S.

• The overall public ranked manufacturing third, just after technology development centers and health care facilities, in terms of the country’s leading sectors for job creation.

“Helping Americans’ perceptions of manufacturing catch up with reality is a vital step in addressing the skills gap, as the U.S. manufacturing industry continues to create diverse jobs involving advanced technologies and innovation,” said Michelle Drew Rodriguez, Senior Manager, Deloitte Services LP. “The demand for these high-skilled positions is expected to soar over the next decade with 3.5 million manufacturing jobs becoming available between 2015 and 2025 as the industry evolves and baby boomers continue to retire.”
