HARBOR STYLE MAGAZINE’S GUIDE TO ENGLEWOOD INSIDE GREAT PLACES & FACES 38 Photos by Heidemarie Burke
Join us as we take you on a whirlwind tour and wave hello to the friendly businesses of one of the state’s best kept secrets – Enchanting Englewood, Florida! First, we eat…

The Lighthouse Grill at Stump Pass is the perfect place to relax and enjoy an exquisite dining experience while overlooking the intercoastal waterway (Marker 17-A). We had tasty smoked ribs, ahi tuna and cocktails, listened to some live music and watched an amazing sunset. They are pet friendly, so bring your pooch.

With new Head Chef Tito Machado on board, Howards Restaurant is turning out delicious new specials every evening, like prosciutto-wrapped scallops with a tawny port reduction sauce. Howard’s 2nd annual golf tournament to benefit the Jubilee Center food pantry raised $11,500. A big thank you to friends, neighbors, Elevating Englewood and sponsors!

Craving Jersey-style pie? Head over to Bobarino’s Pizzeria. Owner Dawn Marie has a loyal staff and a warm, friendly, down home restaurant right off Dearborn Street. And there’s so much more than just great pizza here. They have a menu full of mouthwatering Italian specialties.

Another one of our absolute favorite spots is Mango Bistro. Owners Marie, from France, and Ricardo, from Brazil, have created an authentic little European café with tropical flair. Delicious food, a great wine selection and live world music and jazz on the weekends. Love this special place!

Merrill and Tony Hollinger, owners of Englewood’s on Dearborn, showed us their popular curbside bar, indoor restaurant and the hidden gem, a tropical courtyard dining and music venue. Beautiful! The night we were there the joint was jumping. There’s great food, cold beer and live music five nights a week.

Head down to the beach to visit the legendary Lock N’ Key and check out the complimentary shuttle service for patrons staying on Manasota Key. The Atamunchuk Family has been making some changes the guests love at “sister” restaurant SandBar Tiki & Grille, including new BBQ menu items.

Another great eatery is Spinnaker Café on North Access Road. This family business includes parents Sue and Ken and now daughter Lisa who runs the show most days. Made-to-order breakfast, lunch and dinner. Love their in-house bakery with homemade creamy cannolis. Yummy!

The only downside to having so many great dining spots now is the upslide on the scales! So we joined Melody and Gary from Real Bikes Englewood on their popular Saturday morning ride. The shop is filled with great bikes with complete service and repair, plus apparel – even bike rentals by the day, week or longer. They won Finalist for Best Bike Shop in HARBOR’S HOTTEST 3 years running.

GM Ian Fetigan of Boca Royale Golf & Country Club is seeing an increase in golf rounds being played thanks to the new greens put in last year, along with the expertise of Head Golf Professional Ed McConnell. To top things off, brand new chef, Bruce Bailey, is wowing dining guests with his exceptional culinary skills.

Paige Bakhaus is the area’s most visible ambassador for stand up paddle boarding, SUP for short. She and her guides at Hooked on SUP are Certified Master Naturalists, and you simply can’t get closer to our aquatic nature than by paddle board and kayak. Find her at Cape Haze Marina and the Stump Pass Beach Park!

Check out Riding the Waves, dedicated to providing educational experiences and valuable information on protecting local wildlife habitats. They offer several daily guided tours or ones designed especially for your pleasure. Captain your personal vessel and sit back, relax and enjoy a fun-filled adventure in our beautiful ecosystem. You’ll love where they take you!

Speaking of boating, we dropped by Pinnacle Building Corp. to find out more about the Touchless Cover. Spend less time struggling, more time relaxing and protect your investment from the sun, salt and wind with just a push of a button. It’s the easiest boat cover you’ll ever own! Pinnacle Building is an expert in marine construction and thinks this is a winner – so do we!

We dropped by All About You Salon and Spa to visit with owners Kara Babb and Zoe Babb, who are so happy to have taken their hair salon to a full service spa. You deserve some me-time, so call today to schedule your next service or pamper yourself head to toe with this great team of stylists, aestheticians and massage therapists.

Now let’s take a stroll through Olde Englewood Village. We first dropped into A Coastal Emporium, where we discovered an incredible array of gifts, crafts, home décor and more with our favorite vendors from the now-closed DOME market. Once a group of merchants heard the heartbreaking news, they came together and opened this delightful shop on Dearborn Street. Check it out!

Just a few doors away, Chris Birchfield and husband Steve have BASIX on Dearborn and Beyond Basix. It’s always a treat to visit with them, chat a while and browse their marvelous collection of American-made products. Classic casual women’s clothing and accessories, gifts and vintage décor, all too eclectic to describe here – just go, okay?

Also on Dearborn, pop in and say hi to Rita and Jerry at The Past Revisited. This appropriately named shop is almost more museum than retail, filled with early American primitive pieces. They have some real treasures. Voted 1st Place in HARBOR’S HOTTEST for Best Antique Shop two years running. Don’t forget the ice cream truck. Yes, I said “ice cream truck”!

Ivy’s on Dearborn recently re-opened as a ladies boutique and Karen Tyree has outdone herself! Featuring Oh My Gauze, Fresh Produce and many great European lines of resort wear as well as vegan shoes, local artist’s jewelry and more. This staff understands personalized service.

Very near Dearborn is Ann’s Flowers. We enjoyed watching them create unique artwork with flowers while we were there and browsed their home décor. Ann’s passion is clearly visible in her team’s floral creations for any occasion. No wonder they were a HARBOR’S HOTTEST Finalist this year!

The local artistic talent in Englewood shines bright at the Arts Alliance of Lemon Bay. Visit often and ask the member artist on duty to show you the exhibiting artwork on display, including their own. We always do! Over 50 artists display their work, teach classes and participate in community art projects, including the local Sculpture Garden and art benches.

We also discovered the delightful Sea Star Cove on West Dearborn. Creative Connie Majka offers handmade items, often repurposed from driftwood and old furniture and reincarnated into works of real art and cottage-style coastal décor. Look for the seafoam-colored building with the pink bike out front. Tell them HARBOR STYLE sent you!

Steve and Joni Boger, the cute couple who own Englewood Art & Frame, are happy to announce two convenient locations for the finest matting and framing available. They’re right in the Arts District on West Dearborn and on South McCall Road.

Then we popped over to Lemon Bay Playhouse, where Executive Director Bob LaSalle personally showed us around. This intimate community theatre is such a treasure. Check out the upcoming performances and get your tickets; they always sell out fast.

Women all around Englewood have relied on A Cut Above Styling Salon to stay beautiful and stylish for more than 31 years in this friendly salon on Dearborn Street. Tell them we sent you.

Your eyes are the window into your world. Frame yours perfectly at Englewood Eye Care. Dr. Tad Kosanovich provides the highest level of professional eye care, and they offer a tremendous selection of eyeglass styles. They’re conveniently located on South Indiana Avenue.

Rock and roll aficionado Mark Knauf, CPA, is not only tops when it comes to accounting and tax services for individuals, businesses, estates and corporations, he also has a tremendous collection of guitars displayed in his office. He’s credentialed and ready to rock your IRS problems! Did we mention he won 1st Place for Best CPA in the 2017 HARBOR’S HOTTEST awards?

Computer needs? Victor and the folks at Lemon Bay Computer Service have you covered. They do it all – design, installation and support of any size computer system. They specialize in commercial work but can handle anything. Smart people!

Attorney Lori Wellbaum, a long-time resident of Englewood, is your best legal advisor in the areas of estate planning, probate, trust administration and real estate. Call Wellbaum & Emery P.A. today to handle all your legal needs.

We visited family-owned Suncoast Gold and Silver, the local experts with in-depth generational knowledge. Sixty percent of their daily business comes from repeat customers – amazing! They are the best place to sell items made from precious metals like gold, silver and platinum as well as buy jewelry and coins at close to wholesale.

Another real jewel we have here in Englewood is our very own Englewood Community Hospital. The wonderful staff there is beyond compare, offering the highest level of care. The talented team of caregivers is there whenever you may need them.

We arranged a meeting with dynamo Julia Mercier for lunch one day. Her CPA firm, Mercier CPA Associates, is growing nicely with talented staff. She’s a financial whiz-kid and offers a complimentary initial consult. You should meet her.

We also paid a visit to David at Lasbury-Tracy Realty, and he told us his family has owned property in the Englewood area for more than 100 years! He’s a fourth generation real estate agent and has the oldest real estate firm in Englewood, established in 1951. Let him help you.

Step into the sparkling showroom of Lemon Bay Glass & Mirror and see your dreams become reality. Owner Cliff Gielow and his team designs, constructs and installs glass and mirror projects for local businesses and homeowners. When they are not in the showroom or working in the field, they can be found supporting the Booster Club at Lemon Bay High School.

We made friends with some newly minted Floridians who wanted to explore Englewood’s art scene. We introduced them to the Englewood Art Center. They loved it! Now they are throwing pots, shooting great photos and drawing fabulous figures. Classes for kids and adults – check it out.

Did you know Englewood has a winery? Catania’s Winery crafts their own right here and is top rated by Trip Advisor. John and Margherita Catania host regular wine tastings and carry a great selection of olive oils as well. Stop in and say hi.

You’re in good hands with King Finance and Insurance Group – Allstate for all your insurance and financial service needs. Founded by Wayne King, his daughter Aaren King DeJong has recently taken over this family-run and operated agency. Personal service is their hallmark, which may be why King Insurance was voted HARBOR’S HOTTEST Finalist, Best Insurance Agency.

And just down the road is what we call our secret hideaway, Manasota Beach Club. We attended a gala there and had a ball! Now in its 56th season, they’ve hosted generations of families in the quaint Gulf-side cottages among 25 acres of pure paradise. And their oceanfront setting is perfect for special events.

Many of the photos you’ll see here in EXPLORE ENGLEWOOD are by wellknown, award-winning local photographer Heidemarie Burke of Photographic Images. She invites you to consider her for your next photographic opportunity – she’s renowned for her beach portraits! Weddings and special events are her specialty.

And everyone in Englewood loves animals. Suncoast Humane Society works every day to make life better for thousands of homeless animals a year. Learn more about the work of the compassionate staff and perhaps contribute your own time, talent or treasures. Ask about the Capital Campaign to create much needed new facilities to help these homeless animals.

That’s all for now, bye bye!

A COASTAL EMPORIUM

A Coastal Emporium is a shopping marketplace for seasonal visitors and locals alike.
